FILTERED VISION SERIES, 2017
Artist Statement
My work is based on migration experiences and changes of cultural identity. I use abstraction language to visualize the process of adaption to new cultural environment. In my painting, the juxtaposition of materials emphasizes differences between two cultures. There are pairs of elements were arranged to interact and reconcile to each other. For instance, sized silk mounted on plexiglass, heavy-textured acrylic painted on lotus leaves, hardened fabric highlighted with gold leaves. I’m fascinated with ancient silk painting technique. Raw silk was treated with a solution and slow-drying process before it can be used. Another layer of digital image was transferred on treated silk to create a transparency effect. My painting explores migration state of mind through a chaotic space, expressive brushstrokes and unpredictable marks. Migration is a challenging experience, but when it comes to fighting for a new life, there are no fear or barriers. Dynamic compositions were created using energetic colors and movements. My new life as a young immigrant faces many problems and unknown risks but also full of excitements. |
