WU-XING SERIES (FIVE ELEMENTS), 2016
Artist Statement
In Wu-xing series, the blank appears as strong and quick action marks. There is no under-painting but the untouched white paper was blocked with masking liquid and removed at the end. This series includes five paintings designing to interact and communicate to each other. The system of five has a specific meaning in Eastern culture. Similar to four elements of Western culture, this is “a fivefold conceptual scheme that ancient scholars used to explain a broad of phenomena”. Using that concept as a starting point, I create a continuous movement throughout five paintings, allowing me to play with the order and orientation when I put them all together on the wall. These paintings are a representation of my self-portrait and my identity. The brushwork expresses its inner life through the ch’i as well as the intense emotion through rhythm and movement.
